Surfacing

What’s Underfoot?

Surfacing for your Saskatchewan playground, spray park or park project is very important. The type of surface that works best depends on quite a few factors, including budget, accessibility needs, space, and type of equipment. Some equipment needs to have certain depth of surfacing for a soft, safe landing. When you work with 1 Stop Playgrounds, we will walk you through the best surfacing options for your build.

Read on to see the various surfacing options and our excellent partners who provide them.

Please reach out with any questions you may have! Designing a playground is tough enough, let us guide you through each step.

Engineered wood carpet
Engineered wood fibre is a sawmill by-product that is tumbled, sized and tested to ensure it meets playground fall height requirements. Wood chips perform at a higher level than many surface options when temperatures drop. It is considered wheelchair accessible. We deal with family-run Zeager Brothers for our wood products.
Pea stone surfacing
Pea stones are much like sand with a recommended 12″ depth and guidelines around the size of pea stone to be used. Testing with Triax Surface Impact Tester is needed to determine the suitability of the material. This surfacing is not accessible by wheelchair user.
Sand is economical, but unfortunately is is not an accessible surface. It is recommended that the sand is free of clay and any other material that can contribute to packing down and hardening. The benefits are that it’s economical and easy to maintain.
Artificial turf can be used as a wheelchair-accessible play surface. We work with the folks over at CpTurf.com for our projects. Together we ensure that our playground and park projects have the right impact-reducing layer beneath it to meet safety standards. Turf comes in a wide range of
colours and profiles and is durable.
